In our previous article, I laid out the fundamentals of 5G, including what it is and how it can impact our daily lives and the infrastructure we rely on. If you haven’t already, I highly recommend reading my earlier blog post (https://gupta-bless.medium.com/5g-security-unleashing-the-potential-while-protecting-against-new-threats-845b64156809) on this topic. I’ve written about some of these potential risks in the aforementioned blog post, but there are still a handful more we should talk about.
Both are intertwined, as there is no point in having IoT devices without reliable 5G connectivity. The faster response time and lower latency of 5G are driving massive increases in IoT adoption and usage. Faster data transfer between Internet of Things devices is a direct result of 5G. It paves the way for instantaneous data analysis and faster reaction times. In addition to speed, 5G also offers energy efficiency, which might be useful if you have a lot of Internet of Things devices connected at once. Therefore, 5G will provide scalability, which is essential for the expansion of IoT devices, in contrast to previous generations of 5G. Devices using 5G can run on less power because of the network’s efficient architecture.
There are many potential upsides, but it also introduces many potential downsides, such as the possibility of device tampering. The greater the number of interconnected devices, the higher the risk of compromise, eavesdropping, and “man in the middle” attacks. Management is not quite up-to-date and unable to maintain it, which is a problem whether it is going to be used by humans or machines. That makes them especially susceptible to the exploits.
To ensure the security of IoT devices, we can adopt hardware-based safeguards like trusted platform modules or secure boot to counteract these dangers. The importance of keeping the firmware and software patches for these devices up-to-date on a regular basis…
